Moroccan Delight for UK manufacturers - A gateway to African markets

Could you take advantage of the many opportunities for growth in North Africa?
Mention Morocco to most people and they would automatically think of a sunny destination offering beautiful desert scenery, exotic food and a total culture shock to the British visitor…and they would be right, partially.

Why should you be looking at opportunities in North Africa?
Morocco, like so many developing economies is a country of contrast. Alongside pockets of under-development you will find economic growth and a huge potential for investors and manufacturers with the right approach to market in the right industry sectors. It probably isn’t the first place many UK businesses would consider when developing international growth strategies.

In times where the local economy does not offer sufficient prospects for manufacturers, it is a good idea to explore the feasibility of entering new export markets. Morocco benefits from a low inflation rate, a GDP growth of over 5% and offers opportunities in diverse industry sectors.

What did the research reveal about the Moroccan market?
Delphine Greenhalgh, Director of DG Consultancy, has spent the last six months identifying these opportunities, having been commissioned to carry out a feasibility study on behalf of a Manchester-based manufacturer of industrial replacement parts.

“The project exposed some real potential for growth and a genuine interest from potential distributors in Morocco to represent the client’s products”, says Delphine. ”Companies in Morocco often struggle to supply their own clients with the right parts or industrial equipment, at the right time and at the right price - parts which are paramount to the successful running of their operations.” After identifying a number of potential distributors who fit all of the client’s criteria, a visit was organised last month to gain a better insight into their requirements and capabilities.

Delphine adds, “Despite a punishing schedule and some unexpected floods in Casablanca, the trip was a great success. It is always a worry that the information you gather through desk research does not match the reality on the ground. However, all five companies present real opportunities for our client; each has an in-depth knowledge of the products and the industry sectors coupled with a sound marketing and sales structure.”

Out of all the North African countries, Morocco is probably the one that is the most open to European investment as its infrastructure and business outlook is in fact very similar to what you would find in France. “The French connection and privileged cultural and historical relationship still remains after years of independence in Morocco,” says Delphine.

She also believes that because British products have a reputation for quality, seriousness and a good overall image overseas businesses are happy to enter into discussions if approached in the right way. Companies in Morocco are crying out for equipment, parts and technology in numerous sectors including the food processing, drinks, aerospace, phosphate, mines, chemical, textile, water and waste water industries.

The Moroccan market remains fairly small and highly competitive; but if you have the right business, cultural approach and a desire to succeed in a very welcoming environment you might want to consider Morocco as a potential export market and a gateway to other African countries.

How can we help you to develop your export business?
A French national herself, Delphine is completely at home working with Moroccan and European clients and understands their specific cultural, as well as commercial, needs - which ensures the best chances of success for projects undertaken by DG Consultancy.
